What's A Dental Implant?

Have you heard of a dental implant, but aren’t quite sure what one is?  Dental implants are the gold standard treatment option for replacing missing teeth.  Implants can be used to replace a single, missing tooth or multiple teeth so that the replacement teeth are permanent and non-removeable.  They can also be used as a way to secure removeable partials and dentures.

The implant itself is a small, titanium screw that is surgically placed into the bone.  This is completed by an oral surgeon.  After the implant has healed and integrated into the surrounding bone, Dr. Hauswirth is able to restore the missing tooth/teeth.  The integration process typically takes 3 to 4 months, depending on where the implant is placed and the health of the bone.

If the implant is restored as a single tooth or implant bridge, either a 3D digital or conventional impression is made and sent to a dental lab.  The crown or bridge is then inserted a few weeks later and the process is complete.

If implants are used under a partial or denture, a few more appointments are required in order to create the substructure that the implants will snap into.  Once complete, the removeable appliance is very secure and allows patients to eat and function similar to when they had their natural teeth.
